(Why do I feel like the two of you are inviting me to dig my hole even deeper, and sniggering at me the whole way??)

It was never that you don't like Derek; it is that you don't like him forgetting his appointed place within the show. (Derek should never be allowed to become Peter!) So while you can and have made a WHOLE ENTIRE VID about Derek, I would be surprised if you gave him this much prominence in an ensemble collection.

And vidding to spec doesn't come into it, because you know that I don't hang my love for the show on Derek, and you also know that I am in sympathy with the "don't let him become Peter" issue. You could have put in less Derek than this and had a clean conscience about doing so. Thus, you probably would have. SO THERE. :-P

(God, I am going to regret this convo if you made that vid. I HOPE YOU ARE ENJOYING THIS, CHAILA.)

:: Well damn it, now I'm just curious about how I build my vids! ::

...okay. This is subjective impressions, more than objective truth? And I'm going to describe this in a more formalist way than I think either you or beccatoria quite do? Also, these are not the *only* things you do, not by any means. And they don't even necessarily distinguish you from other vidders: these are just the cues that, when I'm watching a TSCC vid, make me think, "Ah, that's very chaila/beccatoria," not because they're necessarily unique to you, but because I've seen more of either of your combined TSCC work than I've seen of anyone else's, so I associate these things with you.

You and beccatoria both like to do a lot of fast cutting, and use that to densely interleave ideas with each other, like... Venetian blinds? One set of clips are the blinds themselves, one set is what you see through the blinds? Except not necessarily as literal as that: sometimes you're not interleaving two scenes, but two themes or ideas. (Although sometimes your interleaving is exactly as literal as "venetian blinds" would imply: one of your Gaga vids started that way, and you did it a bit on the Derek vid, and beccatoria did it all over the place on Howl and on The Queen.) Also, the interleaving can be more than two layers: I've seen three and four out of both of you, I'm pretty sure. (Of course, this "how many layers deep" issue is hard to define because of the long-block / short-block issue. Take ababcdcdababcdcd: is that four layers, or two interleaved within two? btw, Beccatoria is a LOT more of a formalist about this than you are, Chaila.)

But despite having that aggressively fast interleaving in common, there's a different overall sensation in my head between your and beccatoria's vids. Beccatoria's quick interleaving feels... rounder, like a running your finger over a surface that goes bump-bump-bump-bump-bump, like a ridged rhythm stick. While your interleaving, chaila, feels sharp-edged, cutting, like serrations. Some of that I think is purely sensory -- you pushing light/dark contrasts in adjacent clips, or more commonly, cutting from interrupted motion to interrupted motion to interrupted motion in a way that increases the sharp-edgedness of the sequence.

However, a lot of the rounded vs. serrated difference between your two sets of vids is cognitive: your processing clock speed, chaila, runs substantially faster than mine, while beccatoria's is only a little faster than mine. Your between-clip cognitive jumps are bigger than beccatoria's, and what you mean by a clip is often pretty abstract. (I've come to believe that you have a whole layer of mental coding about this show that I have no access to.) I can nearly follow beccatoria's interleaving in real time, but with yours, chaila, I really can't: usually on the first run-through, I have only the vaguest of ideas of what the vid's main idea might have been. (Gosh, that sounds horrible. But I hope I have been clear over the last however-long that you have made many vids that I love: if you recall, I came to know you because I like your vids. Also, even if I don't know what you might have meant until later viewings, I usually have a clear and strong emotional response on first viewing. That's nothing like a given with other vids that I don't understand right off. A clear and strong emotional response is more than reason enough to hit replay to try to figure out the rest of it.)

So there you are, chaila: the REAL reason I think you didn't make Losing Our Religions is because I understood great enormous swathes of it on the first go. :-P
